It was created in 1887 and Organized in 1889.
It was named for Gilbert A. Pierce, a Dakotas political figure. He was an American author, journalist, playwright, and member of the Indiana House of Representatives, the eighth Governor of Dakota Territory.

NOTE - To acquire records, Pierce County requesters must follow several rules. The office has opening times of 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. CST from Monday to Friday.
