Difference Between North Dakota Prison and Federal Prison
What is the Difference Between Federal Prison and North Dakota Prison?
The North Dakota and federal prisons operate under different jurisdictions. North Dakota prisons are located within the state, and residents of these prisons must be offenders that the state judiciary convicted of violating North Dakota's criminal laws. Meanwhile, federal prisons are located across the United States and remand offenders that the federal court sentenced to imprisonment. Another important distinction is that separate government agencies run the North Dakota prison system and federal prisons. While the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is in charge of the state prisons, the Federal Bureau of Prisons runs the federally-owned prison institutions.
Generally, inmates in prison facilities under federal jurisdiction serve longer sentences than those in state prisons. Residents of the federal prison institutions include both misdemeanor and felony offenders, while North Dakota prisons hold only felony offenders. Misdemeanants in North Dakota are imprisoned in the county jails instead.
The North Dakota Prison System
North Dakota has an estimated incarceration rate of 596 per 100,000 persons. The state's prison system contains incarceration facilities that hold persons sentenced to prison. In this system, the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation manages the four prison facilities in the state. There are about 1,401 offenders incarcerated in the state's prison facilities. Violent crimes (excluding sexual offenses) are the top offenses among these residents.
How to Lookup Inmates in North Dakota
The DOCR's Resident Lookup provides members of the public with access to information on persons housed in state prisons. Individuals can search this database with the name of an inmate. Information accessible from the lookup tool includes the resident's full name, mugshot, estimated release date, and holding facility.
Interested persons may also request North Dakota inmate records in person or visit inmates in prison. To visit an inmate, interested and eligible persons must complete the DOCR's visitation application and be on the inmate's pre-approved visitors list. The DOCR may process applications within a week to two weeks. Applications can be hand-delivered to the applicable prison's front desk or delivered via mail.

North Dakota County Jails
North Dakota county jails detain individuals who committed minor crimes. Incarceration sentences served at county jails are usually under a year. Apprehended defendants are also put in county jail during the pre-trial stage.
Sheriff departments are responsible for managing the county jails. The departments also provide inquirers with information on residents. The offices may also provide inmate information via online platforms. For instance, the Cass County Sheriff's Office provides an Inmate List containing information on persons incarcerated in the county jail.
Individuals can find a North Dakota county sheriff's office by viewing the online directory on the North Dakota Association of Counties site. Additionally, the names, office locations, and contact details of the North Dakota Sheriffs can be obtained from the state government's website.

How Does the Federal Prison System Work?
The Federal Bureau of Prisons runs the federal prison system and oversees the daily operation of the 122 institutions located nationwide. There are about 152,174 total offenders held in federal prison institutions. These institutions are divided into the following security levels:
- Minimum
- Low
- Medium
- High
Most inmates serve their sentences in a minimum or low-security level prison.
Members of the public can locate federal inmates with the BOP Inmate Locator. This online tool is instrumental in discovering an inmate's location and obtaining information about the individual. Requestors only need an offender's name or BOP number to obtain results from the locator.
