It was created in 1873 and organized in 1909.

It was named for Joseph Mountraille, a Metis voyageur of some prominence.

NOTE - There are a lot of rules that must be followed in order for Mountrail County requesters to obtain records. The office is open between 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. CST from Monday to Friday to get records in-person in Mountrail County.
