It was created in 1883 and Organized in 1907.
It was named for Edward M. Bowman, a member of the territorial House of Representatives during the 1883 session.

However, Bowman County charges a fee per record copied. First copies of birth records cost $15 in Bowman County. Death certificates in Bowman County will set a person back $15.
