It was created in 1879 and Organized in 1886.

It was named for Frederick H. Billings. He was an American lawyer and financier. From 1879 to 1881, he was President of the Northern Pacific Railway.

NOTE - Billings County has a variety of rules that must be followed about obtaining records. The office has opening times of 8:00 a.m until 4:00 p.m. (winter hrs) and 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. from Friday (summer hrs) MST.
